Killybegs Fishing Harbour
The Waterfront town house over looks the
picturesque fishing harbour of Killybegs. It is also situated near the
infamous St. Catherine's well.
St. Catherine's well is a beautiful pure spring that bubbles
up through the rock located at the Smooth Point. Tradition has it that a group
of monks were sailing along the west coast of Ireland when a fierce storm arose
which threw them into uppermost danger. The monks invoked the protection of the
patron saint of sea farers - St. Catherine and vowed to dedicate a well in her
honour should they arrive safely on the shore again. This they did and it
happened to be in Killybegs. So they set about building the holy well at the
entrance to the harbour.
The Irish for Killybegs is Na Cealla Beaga - meaning "the
little cells" - was it from these monks, maybe the first settlers in the area,
that the name arose?
Located on the hill above the well is the ruins of Kits
Castle - home to the Bishop of Raphoe many years ago. All that is left of the
building now is the remains of the tower, or keep. The walls can be seen to be
about 7 foot thick and there is still evidence that a substantial building once
stood here.
